A stone’s throw from Piazza Garibaldi in Borgo della Salina, the Gallo D’oro is a historical inn that has been operating since the 15th century. It can easily be reached by walking along the narrow streets of the old town or may be found by chance, just walking past, or it may even be recommended by a friend. A tavern (formerly a salt store) and the ground floor room give the restaurant a touch of class that is well mirrored in the choice of dishes. Tradition, with fried dough parcels and fresh pasta, reigns, but without forgetting more creative and innovative dishes. The glass-fronted veranda, which is open in summer, means customers can eat in a place that is tranquil yet still in the heart of the old town, near the shopping streets that lead to the cathedral and its hexagonal baptistery, jewels of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture famous throughout the world. The menu includes dishes such as fried dough parcels served with cold cuts, Parmesan cheese, tortelli filled with chard, pumpkin, potato and pesto, Parmesan-style risotto, pork cheeks in balsamic vinegar, stuffed breast of veal and aubergine parmigiana. Homemade desserts range from zabaione mousse to plum jam tart. Dishes from the tasting menu are also available. <<<
