At the base of the foothills of the Apennines of Modena stands Castelvetro, a village that has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times. It was the site of an important Etruscan settlement and then a Roman military camp (Castrum Vetus). In 1564 the village became a safe refuge for Torquato Tasso when he fled Bologna: the event is still remembered in the mediaeval piazza with dances and lunches by ladies and cavaliers, soldiers and magistrates, pages and peasants… all lavishly dressed in fourteenth-century costumes. This splendid little village is home to the restaurant “Hostaria del Rio”, which has been a tavern since 1865 when it was called “Osteria della Fortuna”. Customers should try the first courses, the real jewel in the crown, featuring handmade and hand-rolled fresh pasta, and typical dishes prepared using select seasonal ingredients. Mushrooms, truffles and game adorn the menu in the winter, whilst in spring and summer, vegetables and aromatic herbs reign supreme. The cuisine served includes more creative dishes that uniquely reinterpret local traditions. Its architectural structure gives the venue the rustic welcome of times gone by, with the addition of beautiful furniture and great service. This is accompanied by the exquisite welcome offered by the Tagliazucchi sisters, who have been running the Hostaria del Rio for years. The Hostaria del Rio has been awarded the “Excellent Cuisine” diploma by the Italian Academy of Cuisine. <<<
