Locanda Marcella is in the ancient mediaeval village of Festà di Marano sul Panaro in the Apennines of Modena, 435 metres above sea level. It stands within the Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park in the province of Modena, where nature reigns. It is housed in a 17th-century building, which was renovated in 2008 in rustic, but tasteful style. Its rooms are dedicated to wild animals, such as the buzzard, the dormouse, the badger and the great spotted woodpecker. It affords magnificent views over the Panaro Valley and the peaks of the Apennines. The chef, Catia Fornari, an expert of Italian cuisine who has won many important awards, decided to take over the running of this restaurant with her family. Their main aim is to use top-quality, local ingredients in their dishes and above all, to use seasonal produce. All the fresh pasta, bread, flatbreads and desserts are homemade. The same philosophy applies with regard to the selection of wines on offer; in fact, the wine list includes labels by a selection of regional organic and biodynamic wine producers.
