La Pireina is a country-style trattoria with a long-standing tradition that has been welcoming customers since 1907. Now as it always has, it serves the typical dishes of local tradition. Situated in the heart of old Piacenza, the restaurant has the genuine atmosphere characteristic of trattorias of times gone by. The walls bear the smiling faces of the patrons, immortalized in the photographs displayed with pride by Carlo Giacobbi (affably nicknamed “il Gnasso”) and his staff, which narrate the history of the restaurant. Here, Carlo’s mother, an exceptional cook, has welcomed famous faces from the world of culture and show business that enjoyed the traditional dishes prepared with great passion. Beginning with the starters, we should recall the assorted premium local cold cuts accompanied, for example, by fragrant freshly-fried dough parcels or just a small bowl of chopped lard to spread on excellent bread. First courses include the famous tortelli “with tails” and pisarei e fasò (bread dumplings with beans), panzerotti pasta parcels, anolini in broth and bean and Catalogna chicory soup to name just a few. The menu continues with main courses like meat roulades with artichokes, slow-braised donkey, tripe or picul ‘d cavil, the main dish of Piacenza’s gastronomic tradition made using minced horse meat. To finish off, customers can enjoy fresh homemade desserts or caramelized fruit kebabs. Passing customers and loyal friends, gourmets and pleasure-seekers all stop at La Pireina to discover the flavours and recipes of yesteryear, prepared thanks to long-standing experience and served by friendly staff, accompanied by a wine list offering the best local labels. <<<
